Venue of the German Dressage and Show Jumping Championships
On June 20, 1948, the day of the German currency reform, the first horse show was held in Balve. In the vicinity of Wocklum Castle, the Allhoff`sche Wiesen in Balve were converted into a showground.
As early as the 1950s, more than 12,000 spectators attended the horse show at Wocklum Castle. In 1972, Olympic viewings were held here for the first time and until today, seven times Olympic qualifications, nine times German Championships as well as several qualifications for the World Championships have taken place in Balve in the Sauerland.
The list of winners of the "Grand Prix of Balve" sounds like the "who is who" of international top stars in the saddle: Hans Günther Winkler, Hermann Schridde, Harry Boldt, Rodrigo Pessoa, Ludger Beerbaum and many more have already won "gold" in Balve.
The LONGINES BALVE OPTIMUM is therefore one of the most traditional tournaments in Europe and can look back on a unique sporting history, true to the motto: The future needs a past!
